The golf courses
The golf courses we have selected represent the highest
quality and value for money on the Algarve.
|
Quinta
da Ria and Quinta
da Cima
Two of the best golf courses in Portugal. Situated
just over the Portugal/Spain border, on the
beautiful Algarve. Using these courses means
that we can easily include Portuguese golf with
your holiday package. These magnificent 18 hole
courses are a test for any golfer and some of
the tees present an exceptional challenge. The
beauty of these courses is also something to
behold. Located in the heart of a protected
landscape, the courses are dotted with centuries
old olive and carob trees and have views to
the mountains and sea. Designed by Rocky Roquemore
and opened in July 2002, the courses have a
driving range, putting green, clubhouse, equipment
hire and pro-shop. |

Salgados Golf
Salgados overlooks the lengthy Praia Grande ten
minutes west of Albufeira, a short drive from
the airport and central to the Algarve. With its
open terrain and seaside location, Salgados is
very much a traditional links course.
The eighteen holes play across level ground for
an agreeable walk, but the 6,080 metre par 72
layout is a true test of golf. It is above all
a course of character and each hole presents a
different challenge.
It is a superb location, taking one closer to
nature and enhancing every round of golf. |
 |
Golfe do
Morgado
The newest golf course (opened Feb. 3, 2003)
and probably the longest, par 73, in the Algarve.
A great test of Golf. Very peaceful, set amongst
gentle hills, we highly recommend this excellent
course. Long and fast greens with gentle inclinations
and also deep fairway bunkers are truly testing.
Golfe
dos Alamos
Sister
course to Golfe do Morgado, this course has
very different characteristics and is tighter
and a little more undulating in very peaceful
surroundings. Both courses are serviced by the
same fine clubhouse.

Benamor
This course is endorsing its growing reputation
for its player enjoyment and with the recent
improvement of the access from the "Via
de Infante" to Tavira this makes the whole
area much quicker to reach. The course is laid
out on mainly undulating land the course offers
pleasant views both to the Atlantic Ocean and
the hills of the Serra do Caldeirão. Players
accuracy is particularly called upon by the
architects retention of as many of the old trees
as feasible. These natural obstacles coupled
with strategic placed bunkers and occasional
water hazards make the course a worthwhile challenge. |
|
Old
Course Vilamoura
The
course was designed by Frank Pennink and completely
renovated by Martin Hawtree a few years ago.
After a first glimpse of the course you can
see that maintenance is of a high standard.
The course meanders throughout woods comprising
mainly umbrella pines which are seemingly always
in play. Each shot demands close attention.
The opening hole, a short downhill par-4, eases
you gently into the round. In fact, for the
first five holes you can feel you’re going to
burn up the course. From there on, however,
the course lengthens and spreads out languidly,
deeper into the woods. Neighbouring houses are
few and far between and you notice the silence
– except perhaps a shout or two of ‘birdie’.
The par-five 16th hole is one of those you feel
you want to play forever and a day, and on a
mild, sunny afternoon it’s an absolute delight.
The clubhouse soon reappears, surrounded by
flowering gardens, and the terrace is full of
players who have completed their rounds. |

Victoria
Club de Golf
- Vilamoura
Here,
Arnold Palmer and his team designed one of the
most spectacular golf courses in Europe. There
are 22 lakes with an overall area of 12 hectares,
and along their banks aquatic plants harbour dozens
of species of birds that thrive in this kind of
habitat. The putting-green is huge, measuring
almost 2500 m² and is certainly one of the
best in the area. This course deservedly hosted
the 2005 World Cup. |
|
Millennium
- Vilamoura
This
course is a combination of nine holes designed
by Joseph Lee which were later modified and refurbished
by Martin Hawtree who was also the architect of
a completely new 9-hole loop. The higher handicappers
in our group appreciated the fact that the course
was not overly taxing in view of the relative
flatness of the terrain. In fact, it is somewhat
like a links type course that includes five holes
laid out throughout an area with luxuriant pine
trees. The Millennium greens tend to be faster
than those of the other Vilamoura courses and
naturally the better players in our foursomes
were able to produce lower scores. |
|
Pinhal
- Vilamoura
First
Frank Pennink and later Robert Trent Jones Jr.
designed what has become one of the most popular
courses in the Algarve. Only after considerable
time can golf experts distinguish the differences
between the British and American styles of architecture
on this layout. Here the terrain is everything
and, it can be said that the golf course practically
existed in its natural state. All that was needed
in reality were the greens and a few obstructions.
The thousands of well established umbrella pines
provided the rest - and also the course’s name:
Pinhal (pine woods). |
|
Laguna
- Vilamoura
Located
in an area closer to the sea, this course was
designed by a team headed by Joseph Lee. This
includes elevated greens and generous fairways
flanked by threatening bunkers. It is the lakes,
however, that provide character to the layout.
The par-three 4th, 12th and 17th holes are all
strongly influenced by water hazards. Even a slight
slice on the 4th, for a right-handed player, can
find the lake. The bunkers are strategically placed
at the front and left of the large green so a
birdie here is always a bonus. |
